You Passed Your Temps in Ohio — Here's Exactly What Happens Next

Congratulations — passing the knowledge test and getting your TIPIC is the hardest paperwork day of the whole process. What happens next depends on your age, but for most new drivers the very next step is the same: the 24-hour driver education course.

Your roadmap by age

• Under 18: 24-hour online course + 8 hours behind-the-wheel with a licensed instructor + 50 hours of supervised practice (10 at night) + hold your TIPIC at least 6 months. Then the road test.
• 18–20: 24-hour course (required for everyone under 21), then the road test — no 6-month wait, no 50-hour log.
• 21+: practice until you're confident on maneuverability, then schedule the road test. The course is only required if you fail your first attempt (4-hour course) or need a Limited Term License.

Start the course right away

The smartest move after passing your temps is starting the 24-hour course the same week. Under-18 drivers must hold the TIPIC for 6 months anyway — finishing the classroom portion early means the waiting period and your 50 practice hours run in parallel instead of stacking up at the end.

Rules while you drive on temps

• Never drive alone — a licensed driver 21+ must be in the front passenger seat (for minors, initially a parent, guardian, or instructor).
• No phone use. For drivers under 18, any electronic device use while driving is prohibited.
• Your TIPIC is valid for one year — if it expires before your road test, you retake the knowledge test.

Booking the road test

When your requirements are done, schedule the driving test at an Ohio BMV exam station. It has two parts: maneuverability (the cone box) and the on-road drive. Bring your TIPIC, proof of course completion, and — for minors — the signed 50-hour affidavit.
